Magenta Super Saturday - New Stamps!

Welcome back to Super Saturday.  Today I am using the beautiful bird stamp from Magenta’s most recent release of new stamps. You can also see my card on the Magenta blog here.

I used water-based TomBow markers to color the image on the back of vellum – I just love this technique. You can also used alcohol based markers (Copic) or colored pencils - each medium provides a beautiful result.  I cut a piece of 29# vellum to 4 ¼” x 5 ½”.  I used my powder tool very liberally over the surface, stamped the bird image using VersaMark, then sprinkled Brutus Monroe Gilded Gold embossing powder over the top.  To heat emboss the image I warmed up my heat gun for about 30 seconds then kept it moving over the entire surface of the paper to slowly melt the embossing powder without warping the vellum.

I selected several green markers and began coloring the leaves on the back side of the stamped image.  It takes a bit longer for the ink to dry on the vellum which provides more time for blending the colors.  I've listed all the colors I used below.

Once I completed the leaves I moved on to the bird, berries, and the fence posts.
I wanted a colored background for the bird and at first I thought about coloring in that area on the vellum.  Instead, I blended Tumbled Glass and Mermaid Lagoon Distress Oxide inks onto a piece of white cardstock, putting the lighter color in the center, and the darker color around the outer edges.  This will go under the vellum layer to create blue shading.
I used 4 3/8” and 4 5/8” oval dies from the Hero Arts Infinity Dies to create a frame for the bird.  To create this look, I cut a piece of white cardstock and green cardstock to 4 ¼” x 5 ½”.  I used the 4 5/8” oval die to cut the opening in the white cardstock, then adhered this to the green cardstock.  I centered the smaller oval die in the opening, taped it down and ran it through my die cut machine.
Next, I adhered the bird, embossed side up, to the back of the frame, adhered this to the inked blue background and finally adhered them to the front of an A2 card.

Magenta Super Saturday with Pam - New Year's Thank You

Welcome back to my blog.  I hope that your new year is off to a great start.  I have a fun card for “Super Saturday with Pam” which you can also see on the Magenta blog here.

The technique for this card uses alcohol ink and watercolor paper.  I saw it on Jennifer McGuire’s blog and you can see her video here.  She mentioned that she’s been using the technique for a long time so perhaps this technique won’t be new for you.  With this technique you can make several pieces very quickly so I thought it was perfect for making a bunch of thank you cards.
To start I taped the Magenta “All Over Stars” stencil to a piece of Tim Holtz watercolor paper.  I like the Tim Holtz paper for this technique because it is bright white.  I used a VersaMark ink cube to cover the front of the paper with ink.  I removed the stencil then covered the inked areas with clear embossing powder and heat set the powder.  If you watch Jennifer McGuire’s video you will see that she tries other colors of embossing powder.  I did that too and have some pictures of those pieces at the end of this post.
I applied alcohol ink (Patina, Turquoise, Sailboat and a small amount of Silver Mixative) to a felt applicator along with a generous amount of blending solution.  The watercolor absorbs the ink and blending solution quickly so if the colors isn't moving around like you want, apply more blending solution to your applicator.

I pounced the color all over the watercolor paper until the whole card front was covered.  (For a different look, rather than pouncing the color, you can also brush the color in even, back and forth strokes over the card panel.)  The embossing powder acts as a resist so some of the white paper will show through from beneath the embossed area.  Also, some of the color will sit on top of the embossed surfaces.

To finish off the card, I used a 2 ½” oval die from the Hero Arts Nesting Ovals set to cut out the center of the stenciled panel and to also cut a piece of silver metallic cardstock.  I stamped the medium “Thank you” with VersaMark on a piece of white cardstock and embossed it with Wow Metallic Silver Sparkle embossing powder.  I die cut this with a 2 ¼” oval die from the same set and also used the same die to cut a piece of fun foam.

I adhered the stenciled panel to the front of an A2 card.  Then I adhered the fun foam oval to the back of the silver paper, then adhered the sentiment on top and positioned it on the card.  I added a few clear gemstones in the center of each star for a bit more shine.

I couldn’t stop playing with this technique so I tried it with a few other stencils and ink colors.  It’s fun to experiment with how the ink is applied as well different colors and combinations of alcohol ink and embossing powders.  I'll list the stencils and embossing powders below.

The only down side to this technique is that it doesn’t photograph well.  The camera just can’t pick up all the shine that you get with this technique.  I hope you will give it a try to see it in person.
Thanks for visiting my blog.  All the best to you in the coming year.

Birch Press Prism Die, Part two

Welcome back to my blog.  Today I’m sharing more cards made with the Birch Press Prism Die.  If you missed the first card I made, you can read that post here.
When I finished the first card I had a “frame” left over after I removed all the washi covered die cut pieces.  It seemed a shame to just throw it away, so I trimmed away the edges, close to the frame.  I adhered this to the left side of a 3 7/8” x 5 1/8” piece of So Silk Beauty Pink.  I adhered this to a piece of 4 1/8” x 5 3/8” textured pink cardstock and then adhered this to a white A2 card.

I chose a Magenta stamp for the sentiment.  The large “Happy Birthday” (07.975.I) is another stamp designed by Sally Penley, the talented calligrapher.  I stamped and embossed the image on a piece of white cardstock using Charming Pink VersaFine Clair ink and clear embossing powder.  I die cut it with the 2 ¾” Oval die from the Hero Arts Nesting Oval Infinity Dies.  I adhered this to a piece of textured pink cardstock that I cut with the 3” die from this set.  On the back of the ovals I adhered a piece of fun foam that was cut with the 2 ¾” die and then placed this on the front of the card.  I added a few gemstones for a bit of sparkle.

I was kind of on a roll with this die so as you can see by the photo, I made several cards.

Card #2 (center, top row):  Die cut a piece of 4/14” x 5 ½” red linen cardstock with the Birch Press Prism die (#57185.)  Cut a piece of Elizabeth Craft double sided tape slightly smaller than the red cardstock and adhere to the back.  Place the piece on a coffee filter and cover with White Elizabeth Craft Microfine Blitter.  Brush off the excess and burnish well, then adhere to the front of a white A2 card.  Stamp “Joy” and “To the World” from the Poppy Stamps “Tidings of Joy” set (CL467) with VersaMark ink on white cardstock.  Emboss both with Judkins Cherry Twinkle embossing powder (or other sparkly embossing powder.)  Die cut the “Joy” with the coordinating die and trim the “To the World” to 3/8” x 1 ¾”.  Adhere both to the front of the card using small pieces of foam tape.  Add clear sequins.

Card #3 (right, top row):  Die cut a piece of 4/14” x 5 ½” white textured cardstock with the Birch Press Prism die (#57185) and adhere to the front of a dark blue A2 card.  Stamp and emboss Magenta large “Happy Birthday” (06.975.I) using VersaFine Majestic Blue ink and clear embossing powder.  Die cut with 2 ¾” oval die from the Hero Arts Nesting Oval Infinity dies.  Cut a piece of dark blue oval with a 3” oval die from the same set.  Adhere a piece of fun foam to the back of the ovals and adhere to the front of the card.  Add clear gemstones for some sparkle.

Card #4 (left, bottom row):  Die cut a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” piece of red linen cardstock with the Birch Press Prism die (#57185).  Cut a piece of Elizabeth Craft double sided tape slightly smaller than the red cardstock and adhere to the back.  Place the piece on a coffee filter and cover with Light Gold Elizabeth Craft Microfine Glitter.  Brush off the excess and burnish well.  Adhere to the front of an A2 card.  Adhere a piece of double-sided tape to a piece of white cardstock slightly larger than a 2 ¾” oval die.  Remove the cover sheet, cover with Light Gold glitter, brush off the excess and burnish well.  Die cut with the 2 ¾" oval die.   On a separate piece of red linen cardstock, stamp Magenta “Merry Christmas” (07.989.G) with VersaMark ink and emboss with detail gold embossing powder.  Die cut with the 2 ½” oval die, adhere to the gold oval.  Adhere a piece of fun foam to the back of the ovals and adhere to the front of the card.

Card #5 (right, bottom row):  Same as the main “Happy Birthday” card sample except use Magenta medium “Thank You” (07.979.G) for the sentiment.  The sentiment is stamped with Charming Pink VersaFine ink and embossed with clear embossing powder on white cardstock, then die cut with the Hero Arts Nesting Ovals 2 ¼” oval.  Its adhered to a piece of textured pink cardstock cut with the 2 ½” oval die.
I really had a lot of fun with this die and I love how it combines so well with Sally Penley’s stamps from Magenta.  I plan on using this die for more Christmas cards this season.  I hope you will give it a try, too.
