Birch Press Prism Die, Part two

Welcome back to my blog.  Today I’m sharing more cards made with the Birch Press Prism Die.  If you missed the first card I made, you can read that post here.  

When I finished the first card I had a “frame” left over after I removed all the washi covered die cut pieces.  It seemed a shame to just throw it away, so I trimmed away the edges, close to the frame.  I adhered this to the left side of a 3 7/8” x 5 1/8” piece of So Silk Beauty Pink.  I adhered this to a piece of 4 1/8” x 5 3/8” textured pink cardstock and then adhered this to a white A2 card.

I chose a Magenta stamp for the sentiment.  The large “Happy Birthday” (07.975.I) is another stamp designed by Sally Penley, the talented calligrapher.  I stamped and embossed the image on a piece of white cardstock using Charming Pink VersaFine Clair ink and clear embossing powder.  I die cut it with the 2 ¾” Oval die from the Hero Arts Nesting Oval Infinity Dies.  I adhered this to a piece of textured pink cardstock that I cut with the 3” die from this set.  On the back of the ovals I adhered a piece of fun foam that was cut with the 2 ¾” die and then placed this on the front of the card.  I added a few gemstones for a bit of sparkle.

I was kind of on a roll with this die so as you can see by the photo, I made several cards. 

Card #2 (center, top row):  Die cut a piece of 4/14” x 5 ½” red linen cardstock with the Birch Press Prism die (#57185.)  Cut a piece of Elizabeth Craft double sided tape slightly smaller than the red cardstock and adhere to the back.  Place the piece on a coffee filter and cover with White Elizabeth Craft Microfine Blitter.  Brush off the excess and burnish well, then adhere to the front of a white A2 card.  Stamp “Joy” and “To the World” from the Poppy Stamps “Tidings of Joy” set (CL467) with VersaMark ink on white cardstock.  Emboss both with Judkins Cherry Twinkle embossing powder (or other sparkly embossing powder.)  Die cut the “Joy” with the coordinating die and trim the “To the World” to 3/8” x 1 ¾”.  Adhere both to the front of the card using small pieces of foam tape.  Add clear sequins.

Card #3 (right, top row):  Die cut a piece of 4/14” x 5 ½” white textured cardstock with the Birch Press Prism die (#57185) and adhere to the front of a dark blue A2 card.  Stamp and emboss Magenta large “Happy Birthday” (06.975.I) using VersaFine Majestic Blue ink and clear embossing powder.  Die cut with 2 ¾” oval die from the Hero Arts Nesting Oval Infinity dies.  Cut a piece of dark blue oval with a 3” oval die from the same set.  Adhere a piece of fun foam to the back of the ovals and adhere to the front of the card.  Add clear gemstones for some sparkle.

Card #4 (left, bottom row):  Die cut a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” piece of red linen cardstock with the Birch Press Prism die (#57185).  Cut a piece of Elizabeth Craft double sided tape slightly smaller than the red cardstock and adhere to the back.  Place the piece on a coffee filter and cover with Light Gold Elizabeth Craft Microfine Glitter.  Brush off the excess and burnish well.  Adhere to the front of an A2 card.  Adhere a piece of double-sided tape to a piece of white cardstock slightly larger than a 2 ¾” oval die.  Remove the cover sheet, cover with Light Gold glitter, brush off the excess and burnish well.  Die cut with the 2 ¾" oval die.   On a separate piece of red linen cardstock, stamp Magenta “Merry Christmas” (07.989.G) with VersaMark ink and emboss with detail gold embossing powder.  Die cut with the 2 ½” oval die, adhere to the gold oval.  Adhere a piece of fun foam to the back of the ovals and adhere to the front of the card.

Card #5 (right, bottom row):  Same as the main “Happy Birthday” card sample except use Magenta medium “Thank You” (07.979.G) for the sentiment.  The sentiment is stamped with Charming Pink VersaFine ink and embossed with clear embossing powder on white cardstock, then die cut with the Hero Arts Nesting Ovals 2 ¼” oval.  Its adhered to a piece of textured pink cardstock cut with the 2 ½” oval die.

I really had a lot of fun with this die and I love how it combines so well with Sally Penley’s stamps from Magenta.  I plan on using this die for more Christmas cards this season.  I hope you will give it a try, too.

Magenta Super Saturday with Pam

Hi everyone.  I’m back with a quick and easy card that features stamps from the new Magenta release.  I love the large and small Rosa Canina stamps!  They are so versatile and can be used with many different mediums.  My card also appears on the Magenta blog today and you can see it here.

This was actually the second card I made with this technique.  When I was making the first one, I completely forgot to take any pictures for the blog.  I needed a birthday card for a friend so made it again and remembered to take pictures this time.  I’ll post a picture of the first card at the end of this post.  

To begin, I cut a piece of white linen cardstock to 5 ¼” x 4” and placed it in my MISTI.  I stamped the Magenta Large Happy Birthday on the bottom center of the card with Charming Pink VersaFine Clair ink and then embossed it with clear embossing powder.  (I stamped the sentiment first to be sure to be sure I didn’t take up too much space on the card with the flower images.)

Next I created a mask by stamping the large Rosa Canina stamp on a Post-it Note and then cutting it out.  I aligned the large stamp in the center top of the card and allowed a small part of the top edge to hang off the top.  I stamped again with Charming Pink Versafine Clair Ink and then embossed with clear embossing powder.  

When the embossing powder was cool, I put the card back in my MISTI and placed the mask over the large flower image.  I positioned the small Rosa Canina on the left side of the masked image, stamped and embossed.  I repeated the image for the small flower on the right.  

I used an orange Prismacolor pencil for the flower stamens on all three images.  I adhered the card front to a piece of Sol Silk Beauty Pink paper cut to approximately 4 1/8” x 5 3/8” inches (just slightly smaller than an A2 card so that only a small amount of the white card is visible.)  I adhered both to a white A2 card and added a few gemstones for sparkle.

This is the first card I made with these two beautiful stamps.  I used VersaFine Blue Belle ink and the Magenta “Warm Thoughts” sentiment.

Birch Press Prism Die, Part One

I’ve been using the new Birch Press Prism die a lot and decided to try using it with washi tape.  This card was a lot of fun – it did take a little bit longer than most cards but if you like piecing die cut pieces into a frame I think you will enjoy this card. 

 To create this card, I used the Birch Press Prism Triangle Collage (#57185) and Memory Box Happy Birthday Upright Script (99684.)  I picked several spools of washi tape in different widths and textures. 

To begin I applied strips of washi tape across a piece of white cardstock, cut 5 ½” x 4 ¼”.  I used the die as a guide and applied the washi tape in a pattern slightly larger than the die.  

I used a bone bolder to really press the tape onto the paper then ran it through my die cutter.   This die cut very well and most of the pieces remained in place.

For the card front, I did another die cut on a piece of white linen paper, cut to 4 1/8” x 5 ¼” and removed all the little die cut pieces, leaving just the “frame”.  On the back I adhered a piece of double stick tape, cut slightly smaller than the card front. 

To begin piecing the washi tape die cut pieces into the frame, I used my Elizabeth Craft Fine Point tweezers to place the random pieces that didn’t stay in the frame during the die cutting process.  I also punched out a couple of larger washi tape pieces and placed them on the card front.  This helps align the two pieces together.  Next, I put the washi tape piece on top of the card front and aligned them, so the pieces matched. 

Working from right to left, I used the tip of my craft knife to gently push each of the die cut pieces onto the adhesive on the card front.  Periodically I lifted the washi tape piece to make sure the pieces were lined up correctly.  

I followed this process until all the die cut pieces had been moved to the card front.  When I finished I discovered that I had missed a couple of pieces so used my tweezers to place those pieces on the card front. 

I adhered the card front to a 5 ½” x 4 ¼” piece of Sol Silk Beauty Pink cardstock and then to the front of an A2 card.  To finish, I applied strips of metallic washi tape to another piece of cardstock.  I die cut this with the Memory Box Happy Birthday die and adhered it to the front of the card.  I added a few gems for a bit more sparkle.

Putting this card together was a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle, and I really liked the results.  Be sure to keep the empty washi tape “frame” because I’ll have another post soon to show you a card I made with that left-over piece.

Magenta Super Saturday with Pam

This beautiful new extra-large Happy Birthday card is a great stamp for a quick card.  It has a great presence and stamps beautifully.  This card also appears on Magenta's blog today which you can find here.

To create this card, I used my MISTI to stamp the image on a piece of white cardstock cut to 4” x 5 ¼” with the Tsukineko "Spectrum" Kaleidacolor rainbow ink pad.  I cleaned the stamp (without moving in in the MISTI) and then re-inked it with VersaMark ink.  I stamped the image again and then embossed it with Judikins Iridescent Sparkle embossing powder.  Since VersaMark is clear, the multi-color from the Kaleidacolor rainbow pad shows through and the embossing powder really makes the sentiment sparkle. 

Next, I lightly flicked gold watercolor paint over the image.

When the paint was dry, I added strips of ¼” double sided tape to the top and bottom of the card panel, leaving the protective paper in place.  Then I added strips of 1/8” double sided tape to the top and bottom of the card panel, also leaving the protective paper in place.

I removed the first protective strip from the tape, placed the panel on a coffee filter and covered the tape with Elizabeth Craft Amethyst Microfine Glitter.  I used a large brush to remove the excess glitter and then burnished it with my finger to make it shine.  I repeated these steps for each strip of tape using green, royal blue and fuchsia glitter.  I chose those colors because they coordinated with the colors of the Spectrum ink pad. 

To finish off the card, I adhered the panel to a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” piece of gold soft finish card stock and then adhered this to the front of an A2 card. 

This was a quick and easy card and I hope you will give it a try.  Magenta also makes an extra large Thank you stamp (07.978.N) that will also work well with this technique as if almost fills the front of an A2 card.  Like the Happy Birthday, the Thank You stamp also features Sally Penley’s beautiful calligraphy.   There are links below to the stamps on Magenta’s web page.

Magenta Super Saturday with Pam

Welcome back to Super Saturday!  I hope you will enjoy this fun card.  Even though there are several steps, it comes together very quickly.

For the stenciled layer I used a piece of textured white paper from Paper Accents.  The texture adds a bit more interest to the finished card.  I taped the Magenta Square Lace template (TM255) to the paper then used foam applicators to apply Wilted Violet and Mermaid Lagoon Distress inks over the template.  I overlapped the colors so they would blend.  I removed the stencil, cleaned it and then aligned it over the inked design and taped it down again.  I used a VersaMark ink cube to cover the Distress ink design.  I removed the stencil and then embossed it with Judikins Iridescent Sparkle embossing powder. Cut the image to 4 3/8” square.

On a separate piece of white textured paper, I used a MISTI to stamp the Sally Penley calligraphy medium sized Thank you (07.979.G) with Mermaid Lagoon Distress Ink.  Without moving the stamp or the paper I cleaned the stamp and then stamped over the image with VersaMark ink, then embossed with Judikins Iridescent Sparkle embossing powder.  Cut this piece to 2 ¼” square.

 For the layer pieces, use a foam applicator to cover one piece of 2 3/8” square white cardstock and another piece of 4 ½” square white cardstock with Mermaid Lagoon Distress ink.  Cover a piece of 4 5/8” square cardstock with Wilted Violet Distress ink.   

Apply the Wilted Violet layer to the front of a 4 ¾” square notecard.  Next add the Mermaid Lagoon layer, followed by the stenciled white layer. 

Adhere the image with the sentiment to the Mermaid Lagoon square then adhere to the center front of the card using foam tape for dimension.

That’s all there is to it – the embossing powder adds lots of sparkle and fun to this quick card.  It would be very easy to make several of these at one time using different colors and sentiments.

Magenta Super Saturday with Pam

Hi everyone!  I’m so excited to be joining the “Super Saturday” group on the Magenta Blog.  I love the new Magenta collection that will be coming out very soon.  The card I’m sharing with you today features the “3 Poinsettias – 3 Flowers” (03.218.Q) and the medium “Thank You” (07.979.G) stamp that was designed by calligrapher Sally Penley.  Both of these stamps are from the new collection.  This beautiful poinsettia stamp is so versatile that I’m sure I’ll be using it all year!

I made the background using a variation of a technique that I saw on a Jennifer McGuire video. I used Distress Ink mini pads to cover a large acrylic block with splotches of color.  I sprayed it very liberally with water, then put the block, ink side down on the smooth side of a piece of Tim Holtz watercolor paper.  I pressed the block to move the ink around over the whole piece of paper, then put something heavy on top of the block and let it sit for a few minutes for the colors to sink into the paper.   When I lifted the block off the paper, I used a paper towel to wick up any of the ink drops I didn't want on the finished piece.  This technique is so much fun (and fast!) that I usually make several pieces to have on hand when I need them. 

This example uses Dried Marigold, Carved Pumpkin and Festive Berries Distress Inks.

You can vary the color pattern, and intensity of color on the background by the colors you choose, the way you apply the ink (randomly or in a pattern), the amount of water you use and amount of time you leave the block sitting on the paper.  To see more on this technique, check out the video on Jennifer McGuire’s website here.

For today's card I used a piece of background paper from my stash that had been created with Broken China, Tumbled Glass and Wilted Violet Distress Inks on Tim Holtz Watercolor paper.  I used the MISTI stamp positioner to stamp the Poinsettia image with VersaFine Smokey Gray ink.  When the ink was dry I colored in the flowers with Luminance colored pencils (Manganese Violet, Violet, White, Orange, White.)  I put the watercolor panel back in the stamp positioner in the same place.  Then I restamped the poinsettia image plus the “Thank you” sentiment with VersaMark ink, then embossed with Judikins Gold Detail embossing powder.

Hi there!  Welcome back to my blog where I’m sharing my second card as a Magenta Guest Designer which you can also see on their blog here.

For this card I used two Magenta stamps that were released several years ago but they are a couple of my favorite stamps.  The vertical “Happy Birthday” is very useful with many different stamps and the floral tile stamp looks beautiful when colored with watercolors, Copic markers, or colored pencils.

To create this card, I stamped the “Floral Tile” stamp and the “Happy Birthday” stamps on two separate pieces of smooth, black cardstock with VersaMark ink. I also used a VersaMark Pen to add small dots of ink around the “Happy Birthday” image, somewhat like the dots around the flowers on the “Floral Tile” stamp.  Next, I heat embossed the images with detail gold embossing powder.

I used the Finetec Pearlescent Watercolors for the flowers and leaves.  The shimmer of these vivid colors really come to life on dark cardstock.  Since I used cardstock, rather than watercolor paper for this card, I used the water very sparingly. 

After the paint dried, I cut a piece of gold metallic cardstock to 4” x 5 ¼” and adhered it to the front of an A2 card.  I cut the “Happy Birthday” image to 3 ¾” x 1 ½” and the “Floral Tile” image to 3 ¾” x 3 ½” and adhered them to the gold cardstock.

Welcome back to my blog.  I'm so excited that for my next post I've been asked to be a guest designer on the Magenta blog which you can also see here.

The Floral Burst stamp from Magenta's Spring 2018 release was one of my favorite stamps so I have created two cards using this stamp and the same technique.

To create this card I stamped "Floral Burst" twice using VersaMark ink on black cardstock.  I heat embossed the images with Judikins White Detail embossing powder.  When the embossing powder was cool, I colored over the embossed images with various Copic markers (Amethyst, V17; Fushia, RV09; Cadium Yellow, Y15; Cadium Orange, YR07;  Acid Green, YG07; Lettuce Green, YG09.)

I stamped "Think About You Often" with VersaMark on small piece of black cardstock and embossed with Judikins White Detail embossing powder.  I matted both pieces of black cardstock onto Beauty Pink So Silk Paper and then added a few gem accents.

I used the same technique for this card but stamped "Floral Burst" one time then colored with Copic Markers.  I added "Kindness is a Renewable Resource" in the lower right corner rather than on a separate piece of cardstock.  I love this sentiment for thank you cards.

Getting started...

Well folks, I finally did it, I've finally started my own blog.  This site will be "under construction" for a while so I hope you will bear with me as I continue to tweak the layout and content.  I'm really looking forward to "sharing art" with you.

Today I'm sharing a card using a beautiful Elizabeth Craft die and Elizabeth Craft Microfine Glitter.  I recently had the opportunity to work in the Elizabeth Craft booth at the Puyallup Stamp and Scrapbook Expo where I got to see their beautiful dies, stamps, and new glitter colors plus lots of amazing sample cards that featured their products.  This particular video from Elizabeth Craft inspired my cards:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzGWhAsed_g

The great thing about this technique is that you end up with two cards.  To get started, I used VersaFine Clair Warm Breeze Ink to stamp a sentiment from the Penny Black Special Thoughts (30-338) stamp set, in the upper right corner of a panel of white cardstock cut to 5 1/4" x 4".  I embossed the sentiment with Judikins Clear Embossing Powder.  (I love the new VersaFine Clair inks!  They colors are amazing and they also work great with embossing powders.  I plan to be doing lots more with these inks.)

Next I applied Distress Oxide inks (Mermaid Lagoon, Broken China and Wilted Violet) to a craft mat and sprayed it lightly with water.  I cut a mask for the sentiment from a sticky note and placed it over the sentiment on the card panel.  I dabbed the panel into the Oxide ink, working around the sentiment, then dried it with a heat gun.  I repeated this process two more times until I got the depth of color I wanted.

I die cut the panel with the Elizabeth Craft Flower Lace 2 die.  I also die cut a second piece from a panel of white cardstock that had been cut to 5 1/4" X 4".  This gives you two die cuts and two open panels.  To the back of the Oxide Ink panel, I applied a piece of Elizabeth Craft double sided adhesive, cut slightly smaller than the panel.  I turned it over, sticky side up and pieced in the white die cut, pressing it into the adhesive firmly.  Then I put the panel on a coffee filter and sprinkled Elizabeth Craft Blue Streak MicroFine glitter over the panel.  Tap off the excess glitter and burnish it with your finger.  The more you burnish the glitter, the more it will shine.  Wipe off the panel with a microfiber cloth.

To finish the card, I adhered the panel to a piece of Glamour Green So Silk cardstock and then adhered it to an A2 size card.  I added a few gems for accents.

For the second card, I followed the steps above and pieced the Oxide ink die cut into the white cardstock panel.  I used Elizabeth Craft Amethyst Microfine glitter and in addition to gems, I also used the swirls from the die cut for additional accents.
